This Week in DCTV 1/12/19

Welcome to This Week in DCTV, where the Twisted Cape examines, breaks down, and gives a quick review of all the original shows that DC has released this week. This will run weekly and start on Sunday and end on Saturday, so we catch everything on the CW, Fox, and the DC Universe streaming service. We will eventually be incorporating all of it, including the content from other networks, like Syfy. We’ll also include an average on the week to help determine whether the week was a success. Keep in mind there will be spoilers on a regular basis so read on at your own risk. Weekly Score (Out of 5) – 3/5 Well, here is the last short week before the CW jumps back into the fray with the Flash. Solid week, but Young Justice: Outsiders clearly carries the load. Twist of the Week (SPOILER, sorry!) goes to Young Justice for the big proposal. DC Universe Young Justice – 3.5/5 – “Private Security”, ”Away Mission”, ”Rescue Op” In Private Security, While Jefferson, Conner, and Artemis find homes for their Markovian strays, Dick assembles a new squad and hits the road – but may not survive the trip. In Away Mission, A distant conflict sends the team on an away mission, while the Happy Harbor gang decides what to do with Brion Markov and Halo. In Rescue Op, Brion Markov is determined to rescue his missing sister – even if it means throwing down against the entire League of Shadows. SPOILERS – First of all, I love that DC Universe is releasing 3-episode chunks, even though I thought I’d hate it. Back to business, though – keep in mind that despite the focus tends to be on this new group, it is still very much about our original team – Artemis, Dick, Wally, Connor, Megan, and Kaldur. We see Dick struggle with coming to terms with leading another team, while still carrying the burden of losing his best friend. We see how Artemis is a different type of leader, being encouraging and supportive as well as strong. Meanwhile, in a fan pleasing moment, Connor proposes to Megan. These episodes remind us how much they’ve grown as well as how much growing they still have to do. The new team (we’ll just start calling them the Outsiders) gets gear and some training, which leads to Brion going after the League of Shadows to find his sister. This quickly gets shut down, but at the end of the conflict, we get a glimpse of who may be Jason Todd and Damian Wayne with Ra’s. Solid work this week, but I have a feeling the next set of episodes will step this up a little bit. Fox Gotham - 2.5/5 – “Tresspassers” Gordon and Bullock investigate a location where several kids have been kidnapped; Barbara proves to be an unlikely ally to Gordon; Bruce looks into an alleged witch with healing powers for Selina; Nygma deals with his demons. SPOILERS – Picking up where last week left off, Gordon goes off to rescue the kids trapped with a group of officers. He goes to Barbara for supplies, who essentially dares him to go and get himself killed, especially with Penguin’s bounty on his head. After a showdown, he rescues the kids, but then it goes south separating Gordon, Bullock, and a few of the kids from the larger envoy. They deal with Ghost, an older lady who seemed to have meta powers that gave the episode a horror vibe. As they escape that, they are rescued from another scrum by Barbara, which is getting a bit tiresome. Put these two together or don’t – stop changing how you want us to view the pairing. Bruce goes to Ivy, who may or may not be killing people, depending on who you believe. He gets what he needs from her to heal Selina, but it radically changes her, seemingly allowing her to further embrace her inner cat. Alright episode, but it feels like there’s some filler here, especially with a limited amount of episodes, a promise of an evolution to Batman, and a flash forward that has already shown a vastly different world that what we’re currently in. #YoungJustice #Gotham #DC #Batman #Nightwing #Superboy #Tigress #Outsiders
