This Week In DCTV 7-6-19

Welcome to This Week in DCTV, where the Twisted Cape examines, breaks down, and gives a quick review of all the original shows that DC has released this week. This will run weekly and start on Sunday and end on Saturday, so we catch everything on the CW, Fox, and the DC Universe streaming service. We will eventually be incorporating all of it, including the content from other networks, like Syfy. We’ll also include an average on the week to help determine whether the week was a success. Keep in mind there will be spoilers on a regular basis so read on at your own risk. Right now, the focus is on DC Universe as that is the only DCTV that can be found. Weekly Score (Out of 5) – 3/5 Overall, a solid week, but Young Justice has some work to do before gaining back it’s high praise product. Swamp Thing continues to be amazing, making us more and more sad that it’s going away. Twist of the Week is that we FINALLY find out who is behind Alec’s accident. DC Universe Young Justice: Outsiders – 2.5/5 – “Influence; Leverage; Illusion of Control” Influence - The team reassembles while the Justice League faces a new threat in space; Leverage -A new Gamma Squad is sent out on its first mission to investigate rumors of meta-trafficking in Russia; Illusion of Control - Across the nation, the team gives thanks for what they have…and for what they very well might lose. SPOILERS – Operating as a midseason premiere, I wasn’t enamored with these episodes. At times it feels like there are a ton of story threads going on at the same time and I get a little scared that they won’t all be properly addressed. One of the reasons fans love Young Justice is because of that original team, and many of them are barely featured. No Nightwing, sparce Aqualad (Aquaman now), lots of Artemis, very little Superboy and Miss Martian. Another reason is the relationship of the Team with the League, but they are all over the place and as this week’s episode cluster reveals, some of them are in space. There are cool moments like those in Russia, but I wasn’t thrilled overall. On top of that, up until the end of the season, we only get one episode per week moving forward. Hopefully, we get a nice rebound starting next week. Swamp Thing– 3.5/5 – “The Price You Pay” While Swamp Thing finds a new way to communicate with Abby, Matt learns the truth about Alec Holland and Avery pressures Woodrue to deliver results. SPOILERS – This episode got a little bit crazy. Abby and Alec continue to be the heart and soul of this show, with the latter desperately fighting to hold on to his humanity. I love seeing him learn more about The Green and his eventual embrace of it. We moved closer towards seeing actual Blue Devil, which is incredibly satisfying. I’m not sure about how they intend to move forward with this forced feeling love triangle, but I’m really hoping it isn’t the focus moving forward. Matt and his mom are clearly among the worst people to be cops, let alone running the department. Finding out that Matt is behind the explosion that turned Alec into Swamp Thing was a heck of a reveal. Avery is great as a foil for 2 reasons: first, he is charismatic, and second he is a scary individual. I’m curious about how Woodrue factors into the stretch run on this show. The longer it goes on, the angrier I become about the cancellation. However, I am pleased with the horror roots (no pun intended) that the show has on display on a regular basis #SwampThing #YoungJustice
