This Week in DCTV 1/5/19

Happy New Year and welcome to This Week in DCTV, where the Twisted Cape examines, breaks down, and gives a quick review of all the original shows that DC has released this week. This will run weekly and start on Sunday and end on Saturday, so we catch everything on the CW, Fox, and the DC Universe streaming service. We will eventually be incorporating all of it, including the content from other networks, like Syfy. We’ll also include an average on the week to help determine whether the week was a success. Keep in mind there will be spoilers on a regular basis so read on at your own risk.

Weekly Score (Out of 5) – 3.5

This week is light on content, which is nice coming into the New Year. In the coming week, this space will be jam packed with content! Twist of the week is the waves of nostalgia generated by the return of Young Justice, particularly the end of the first episode.

DC Universe

Young Justice – 4/5 – “Princes All, Royal We, Eminent Threat”

In “Princes All”, Dick Grayson gathers a squad to shut down meta-human trafficking. In “Royal We”, Dick Grayson and his team go undercover in Markovia. In “Eminent Threat”, Conner Kent and Prince Biron Markov are in the clutches of Count Vertigo. SPOILERS – We’ll score these as one episode as they release in 3 episode chunks. This arc was a great way to bring viewers back in contact with the main characters of the series while also building on the continuity of the world they created and setting up a conflict for at least part of the season. The League falling apart paired with Nightwing running his own covert ops are absolutely interesting, especially when Dick’s ops fall apart and they have to adjust on the fly. The character arc for Black Lightning is excellent thus far. While the animation at times seems dated, at times it illustrates points perfectly, particularly Halo’s “death”. Something big is coming in this season around metahuman trafficking and you can just feel it, especially as it relates to the Prince of Markovia and Superboy. Great to have the show back.

Fox

Gotham - 3/5

Jim Gordan and Bruce Wayne face the chaos Gotham City has become, as the villains who survived the attack on the city begin to resurface and claim various territories; Selina Kyle grapples with how to deal with her uncertain future. SPOILERS – When beginning with a time jump and then moving backwards, it’s always a risk. Only time will tell if that pays off, but up front, it’s interesting to see where we’re headed. The show continues to defy logic at times, but we’ve officially reached ‘who cares’ status. Rations are running low and Bruce attempts to help by bringing in food and medicine via chopper, which causes a huge fight, resulting in Tabitha’s death. Selina needs surgery and lashes out at Bruce which strengthens his resolve to be a force for good for the people of the city. They are clearly out to thin the cast out by the end of the series. Interestingly, the Riddler seems to be having a mental break leading to him waking up in odd locations. We’ll see how this goes as time goes on.
